Renegades, By Marissa Meyer- Spoiler Free Book Review, By Makaila Odoom
“Blends sci-fi and action like a young adult X-Men novel, asking what it means to be a hero and what it means to be a villain.” ―Paste Magazine
“Beyond the capes and masks is a strikingly grounded story of star-crossed would-be lovers, deception, and the recognition that most of humanity exists between the extremes of good and evil.” ―Publishers Weekly, starred review
Renegades might just be one of my new favorite books — and trust me, that’s not an easy title to earn. Like most books outside my usual fantasy comfort zone, I went into this one a little skeptical. But it absolutely delivered.
The Renegades are a group of prodigies with supernatural abilities, who emerged from a crumbled society to bring peace and justice to the world. They are everyone's symbol of hope...except to the villains they once overthrew.
Nova Artino despises the Renegades, and she has a reason for it. Nova is on a mission for vengeance. As she gets closer to her goal, she meets Adrian, a boy who believes in the Renegades, justice...and in Nova. But Nova's allegiance is to a powerful villain, one that has the ability to destroy them both.
One of my favorite parts of the book was watching Nova and Adrian’s relationship develop. At first, Nova is skeptical about him, but eventually they bond over their passion for wanting justice, even thought they have different view on what real justice is. What starts as hesitation slowly shifts into trust and understanding, creating a dynamic that adds emotional depth to all the action and tension.
What kept me hooked on this book was definitely the unique personalities of the characters, the way fast-action moments were combined with emotional moments, and how the book challenges the idea of what it truly means to be a hero or villain.
The world of Renegades blends futuristic elements with touches of the familiar past, creating a setting that feels both modern and grounded. The story takes place in Gatlon City, a bustling metropolis that shares similarities with New York City while also carrying a sleek, almost West Coast–style futuristic vibe.
The story is also shaped by Nova’s past, which plays a huge role in her motivations. As the plot unfolds, more secrets come to light, raising the stakes and constantly challenging what the reader thinks they know. Prepare for the plot twists, because it's a wild ride.
If you enjoy Marvel or DC Superheroes stories — or just love complex characters in high-stakes situations — this book is definitely worth picking up. Even if superhero stories aren’t normally your thing, Renegades might surprise you the way it surprised me.
So go out to the library, bookstore, or wherever you get your books from, and get Renegades. I promise it'll be worth its 592 pages. ;)
Happy Reading!
