Let's Conserve Together! By Makaila Odoom

I was just a normal day. I had just gotten back home from school, finished my homework, and ate a snack. I was thinking about what my science teacher was talking about in class today about energy conservation and use. If we don't stop using fossil fuels, our world will be completely polluted. I had been thinking of ways to save energy ever since. Although, doing my homework with the lights off wasn’t a great idea. I lied in bed, thinking of other ways to save energy and writing them down in my notebook.

  1. Turn the lights off when I’m done using them
  2. Don’t waste food
  3. Keep my devices on low power mode
  4. Walk or bike to places near me instead of getting driven

I was about to add number 5 to my list, when all of a sudden, a bright flash filled my room, almost blinding me. I jumped out of bed, and I’m face to face with a girl about my age. She looks almost normal, except she’s wearing this really weird blue glowing suit, and holding a ticking pocket watch.

“It worked!” She exclaimed.

I took a few steps back and grabbed my Alexa, in case I needed to protect myself. Sorry, Alexa.

“What worked?” I asked, alarmed. “Who are you, how did you get here, why are you here, why are you dressed so weirdly?”

She cleared her throat. “The air is so much cleaner here. Oh, my time traveling machine. I’m Katy. I got here using the machine. I came here to tell you something, and this suit isn’t weird where I come from.”

“Where do you come from?” I asked.

“Florida. In the year 3000.”

I jumped on my bed.

“You’re a time traveler?!” I asked.

She nodded. “I’m going to make this quick, because you looked freaked out.”

I roll my eyes.

“In 3000, there are no fossil fuels left. No oil, no gas. We can’t drive anywhere, or cook anything. We’re struggling, and barely surviving, because we used it all up. Too many factories made, too much energy used and now we’re all out. This device is our last chance to save our earth. Since I ended up here, you’re our last chance. We need your help. You can do it. I see you already have some ideas,” She points to my notebook. “Tell everyone you know, and tell them to tell everyone they know. We need help,” She finished.

“And with that, she glittered away in another bright flash,” I say to the kids in the reading circle. “So are you going to help save Katy? Are you going to conserve energy!?”

“YEEEAAAAAAHHHHHHH!” They all scream, looking at me with giant grins on their faces.

Let’s conserve together!
