Cake Calamity

"What in the land of cheese is going on here!?" I exclaim as I walk through The door. Naturally, no one hears me.

Let me describe this scene for you.

Chloe is sitting on the kitchen counter with a bowl of white goop, and a hand mixer in the goop on high, thus, the goop is spraying everywhere.

Olive is standing by the balloon blower machine with a giant bag of balloons in the living room. But, instead of tying the balloons once they're inflated, Olive lets them go, and they go flying around the room. Deflated balloons are spread all over the living room...

Meanwhile Colin is struggling to make smoothies. He forgets to put the top on before starting the blender, and banana, strawberries, peach, and yogurt sprays everywhere.

Mom and dad are running around, trying to clean up everything.

I sigh.

Good ol' family.

I whistle to get everyone's attention, and they all freeze. My mom runs into the foyer from the kitchen to engulf me in a hug.

"Phoe! Thank goodness you're here!" She kisses my forehead, and I decide not to mention that I saw her 45 minutes ago.

She finally lets go of me. "As you can see, we require assistance," she says.

I nod, and clap my hands together. “Alright, everyone! Let's de this!" I start. "Chloe, get off the counter, clean it with wet paper towels. Put the bowl and mixer beaters in the sink and clean them with soap.”

Chloe groans, but does as she's told.

"Olive, pick up all the balloons and blow them up the right way!" I exclaim.

"Aww, I was having fun!" she pouts.

I turn over to Colin.

"What kind of person doesn't remember to pụt the lid on the blender?" I chuckle.

Colin's mouth falls open. "Hey! A balloon flew into my eye, at the same time Chloe's cake glop flew into my ear!" He argues: "It was a reflex. I didn't mean to press the button!"

I sigh. "Sure, Colin. Whatever. Just clean it up."

My dad paces around the kitchen island. "Oh, what are we going to do!? The party starts in less than two hours!"

I reach for my phone in my pocket, "Don't worry, daddy. I’m calling the reinforcement.”

Chloe bounces up and down "Mari! Yay!"

I smile. Chloe and Olive love Mari. She's the happiest person i’ve ever met. Always the optimist.

I would call Valentina, but she has a science workshop at 1, which is in fifteen minutes. She always comes to the park at twelve, so that was why I saw her earlier.

Colin's party starts at 2:45.

Mari lives in the same neighborhood as me so it takes her two minutes to arrive and hug me and the twins.

"Okay, Chloe. How about you help your mom make the cake?" Mari proposes, in her Polish accent.

"Okay!" Chloe squeals, bouncing over to where mom had started to make new batter.

"Olive, your dad can help you blow up balloons, while Phoebe and I help Colin with the smoothies,” Mari finishes.

I blow out a breath, "Thanks, girl," I say.

She smiles, "Don't mention it."

I get to work mixing the fruit, ice, and water, while Mari and Colin get the smoothie cups. I don't forget to put the top on.

"So, Colin!" Mari shouts over the blender, her blonde curls bouncing as she brings over the plastic smoothie cups. "How was the last match of the tennis season?" She asks. Out of all the things to talk about...

Colin smirks. "It was great!' he says, pouring the first finished smoothie batch into the cup. "I don't know if you’ve heard, but we won!"

I roll my eyes. "Please, Col. Australia has heard you won." I take the smoothies to the refrigerator and start the next batch.

Mari chuckles. "She speaks the truth." She says switching from her Polish accent to a fake British accent, holding up one finger.

We burst into laughter.

Now it's Colin's turn to roll his eyes.

"I will never understand girls," he says, which makes me crack up even more.

"You might wanna check if Oliver's your twin," I snort. "He said the exact same thing 35 minutes ago!”

"Smiley Boy and I have nothing in common. We’re complete opposites!” He replies.

I slap my knee, "Colin, I believe you just called yourself Frowny Boy!”

Now, Mari and I are laughing super hard, and my stomach starts to hurt.

"Okay, girls," My mom cuts in, as she fills the cake pans with batter.

"You better finish those smoothies before your brother explodes," she says to me, fighting back a laugh of her own.

Colin's face is red when I turn back to him, and steam is practically coming out of his ears. He glares at me. I shrug, and give my best innocent smile.

I pour the rest of the smoothies in the up, and Mari puts them into the refrigerator. "There, " Says Colin. " Now, what?"

I take his shoulders. "Now, buddy, you go help dad and Olive with the decorations.”

He huffs and turns to walk to the living room, but not before saying, "Just because you're five seconds older than me, doesn't mean you’re the boss of

me."
I click my tongue, "Maybe not. But I am an expert.”
