Why Do Some Rabbits Have Red Eyes? By Makaila Odoom

 Rabbits With Red Eyes

Why do rabbits have red eyes? Well, no one exactly knows why, but scientists think it's because it helps them see in the dark. Rabbits aren't asleep at night, they sleep in the afternoon, but they are not nocturnal.

Their red eyes help rabbits absorb more light, in places that might not have a lot of light. This is really helpful to them because they are prey animals, and they need to be able to see when they are trying to avoid predators.

Many people, in fact, avoid adopting bunnies with red eyes because they think that the rabbit is a bad or sick type of rabbit. This is NOT true! Every type of rabbit deserves love no matter how they look. Even if you don't like your rabbit, (which I hope is not the case) they love you unconditionally, if you treat them the right way.

Be careful not to mistake a rabbit for having hyperemia if they just have regular red eyes. Hyperemia is an eye disease. Look for the facts. If a rabbit has hyperemia they might have watery eyes, blurred vision, swelling eyes or pus coming out of their eye.
