Foster Friends: Katie's Idea (Chapter 1, Potential Book), By Makaila Odoom

 Chapter 1

Best Day of the Year

Hi, I’m Katie, I’m eleven, and today is the BEST day of the year. Actually, today is almost the first day of the year.

I was watching fireworks with my sister, Abby, my Dad, and my Mom. The best part is that we’re going to watch a movie after the fireworks. “BOOM,” the fireworks thundered.

“AHHHHHHH,” I screamed.

I hadn’t expected the fireworks to boom yet. “Relax,” said my younger, sister Abby “They're just fireworks.”

“I know,” I said, “They scared me.”

“Ok guys time to make some popcorn, and watch the movie," said my Dad.

“Yay!” cheered Abby and me, “Movie time!”

As you know, Abby is my younger sister, she is eight years old, and I’m eleven years old. We are three years apart. I also have a younger brother named Tyler, he’s nine months old.

Sometimes Abby can be really annoying, I mean I love her but she can get to be a little much. On the other hand, my baby brother Tyler is so cute, sometimes loud but I get over it. By the way, he was downstairs with my mom and she was trying to get him to fall asleep.

It's almost time for the school year to start again, I’m in the fifth grade, since I just turned eleven, but in September I would be starting middle school. I had a New Year’s break and I was sad that it was almost over. But the good thing was I get to stay up till twelve. it’s 9:00 PM now, so we had time to watch the movie. It’s called The Horse and the Dog. It's about this Horse that meets a Dog and then they become best friends. I missed my own best friends, Georgia, Kaila, Zoe, Anna, Becky, and Elizabeth. I couldn't wait to see them at our start of the year party which was tomorrow, at 1:00 PM. So my family and I went in the house ready to make popcorn.

“What movie are we watching,” Abby asked.

“The Horse And The Dog,” I answered.

“Hey,” Abby complained “how did you know the name of the movie but I didn’t!”

“Because I picked the movie, Abby,” I explained.

“Okay, movie time!“ My mom shouted.

"Coming!” Abby and I shouted after Mom.

“Let's make some popcorn!” We both said.

I get the kernels out of the pantry and pour them into the popcorn maker. Then I get olive oil and pour it into the container at the top, where you heat the olive oil. Then Abby presses the button and vroom! The popcorn maker starts and I quickly get a bowl out of the cabinet so the popcorn will fall into the bowl.

“Pop pop pop pop pop,” went the popcorn.

My family and I sat down on the couch with bowls, after I finish making the popcorn.

“Yay! Finally, time to watch the movie,” Abby sprung up with excitement.

“Wahhhhhhhh.” Tyler screeched from his crib upstairs, and we could also hear him on mom’s baby monitor.

“Mom can you tell Tyler to shhhh,” Abby put her finger to her lips, “And tell him we’re watching a movie.” Abby cried.

“No, I cannot. Katie can you check on him?” Mom asked.

“Uggghhhhhhh!” Abby cried “I just want to watch the movie.”

“And we will, You just have to be patient.” Mom replied.

I ran upstairs to get rid of my sister's whining voice. “Tyler are you okay?” I said when I made it to my parents room.

“Mmmmm,” Tyler said in a cute baby voice and then he fell back asleep. I ran back downstairs. “He’s fine,” I said. “Okay, finally, we can watch the movie!” Abby groans.

We watched the movie. It was really nice. I kind of wanted to watch it again.

“Mom are we ready to turn the new years countdown on?” I ask. “We’re ready, Katie,” Mom says as she turns the TV on.

And before I knew it we were cheering. “YAHOO,” Abby screeched

It was the new year. Before I knew it, right after that I was tucked into bed and asleep.
